My hubby and I discovered a dying snake (about 14 inche long or so) lying in the driveway. It was barely moving...there were two black and orange striped bee-like creatures crawing on the snake. When the snake completely stopped moving, they flew away. What the heck happened here? I have searched the internet and cannot find any info on this. I sure hate to think we have vicious types of bees here in New Brunswick!

I am not sure but you better purchase a hat net. That sounds serious.

The bees may have been just checking it out to see if there was a meal there since the snake was dying. We have meat bees here. Certain times of the year they are real aggresive. The snake may have eaten something to make it die. I don,t think just 2 or 3 bees would have much affect on a snake. If it was a whole swarm of bees then that would do the job.

I don't know....when we first saw the dying snake, we thought the "what-ever-they weres" must be attempting to eat something dead...but then it moved a bit...showing it was still alive. When it quit twitching they just took off. I suppose it was possible that a swarm of them had killed it and they were the only two left...but it sure looked as if they had killed it and when they were sure it was dead they left. My husband thought they resembled baby bumble bees. Their colour was wide deep orange and black bands on a bumble-bee type body. I have never seen them before and I hope I never see them agin. The snake had its head drove right down in the gravel as if it was trying to get away. Spooky! Yuk! I sure wish I had gotten a picture of them.

Bumble Bees are attracted to bright colors. There is over 300 types of bumble bees. They don,t usally sting. I have bumble bees in my garden. They never hurt me. They are better pollenaters than bees. I was once stung by a carpener bee.(They are big like bumble bees, but black)That was because I didn,t see it while I was pulling weeds. I grab him, I let go real quick

Nope did not run over it...not flattened out a bit. Hubby checked him out real good. The only thing suspicious were these two orange and black things. My garden and flowers are full of ordinary bees...we have never seen anything quite this colour before. They were about the size of a slightly large baby bumblebee. They took off together almost like a pair of something.

Did you look into the sky to see if there was an FUO nearby? Sounds kind of weird.

bees will die after stinging, most likely they were hornets or wasps?

Ahhh these orange and black things did the actually look like bees or were they what I call a death beetle(they have a real name I just don't know it). We find them when something is dead. They are gone normally before the maggot stage.

Would bees sting through the skin of a snake?
I bet the folks on " CSI " would know what caused the snakes demise.

Or maybe the X Files. Come to think of it they did take off like they knew just what they were doing and where they were going. Creatures from a U.F.O.??? Now maybe you are on to something. I have never heard tell of a death beetle...and yes they did in deed resemble bees...but did not look exactly like them. Oh well too late now, I have found no more dead snakes and the bee like things are long gone. Hope they stay gone too! I am no lover of snakes but if in deed those things killed it, I want no part of them either.

Ah there now...an answer at last. Blame it on the government! Of course! They are responsible for everything else that goes wrong so why not blame them for the great snake caper? LOL
