Hi Gang,

I'm about to plant 21 cedar trees along the back of our new property. The trees are 8 feet high and have a pretty decent size root ball.

My question is,

Are there any special additives I should add to the hole in which I plant these cedars? I planned on mixing up some composted manure/gypsum and maybe a time release balanced synthetic like 10-10-10.

Not sure what cedar trees thrive on...anybody know?

soil is clayey with alot of rocks and some sandy areas. Sorry no soil test yet.

Just a little bit of bone meal in the planting hole. The most important thing is to make sure when the cedar trees/hedge grow, that it will not shade the patch.

If they are Eastern red cedars they won't require much of anything. They are known as pioneer trees that will grow on very poor soil. For more info go to the Arbor Day Foundation site.

I heard the other day that some bugs don't like cedar trees. Is it possible that cedar could be used to repel some of the insects that prey on pumpkins? Maybe as a mulch?
