I've got some white pines I started from seedlings & I'm going to remove a row of branches to help get some air circulating & to create a "trunked" affect to the tree. This is the 3rd year I'm doing this as I only wanted to remove 1 row a year. My question is in years past I removed the row after the new growth was done, is this correct or should I remove the row before the new growth comes out. Thanks........... Paul

Huff,
From what I've read, the best time to prune evergreens is in the late Winter or early Spring ,before new growth starts, EXCEPT for Pines. If heavy pruning is delayed until Summer, dormant buds already present will stay dormant until Spring. Remember, any pruning promotes growth!

I have allways pruned my evergreens while they were still dormant. Early spring has produced the best growth results at my dads 20 acre old growth property. We also use this time to do our early slash pile burn, as wild fires are prevelant later on around here, (Lightning)..
