Doug, studies have shown that 95° is the optimal soil temperature for watermelon seed germination, and at that temperature, the maximum number of seeds will germinate and in less time than at any other temperature.

I agree with Tom. Temps should be a little warmer than pumpkins, but will still germinate at 85 degrees. I found that they just take a little longer to break through at the lower temps.

Mine germanated at room tempurature. It took 12 days but they all germinated. I do not know if that will have an effect on them later in the growing season but that is what I did.
