Does anyone know what type of glue to use to join sheets of plastic that I'm using to solarize my patch, or can I use packing tape to join the edges?

It's a slow process but those hot extrusion glue guns join plastic sheeting together very well, just glue in between a 1-2 inch overlap. And/or you may be able to get ground cover sheet jointing tape if you contact a Horticultural sundries company. I would give a link to such a company but they are in the UK and costs might be high to have items shipped to the USA.

Yes he needs a seam that holds the heat.

Thank you anyway because we who saw your hot fork trick have learned a valuable lesson, for other applications.
