Seems that the first few are bitter so far. They are also a bit more white than green. The newer ones are darker green and taste a lot better. Hot Cold Hot Hot Cold weather. Is this just the weather and stuff? Lemon cukes are perfect. Should I spray with something. I have been spraying with fertilizer, seaweed, whatever is left from spraying the pumpkins.

Lack of water can make cucumbers bitter and white. Sometimes the first and last cucumbers are on the bitter side for some reason.

lack water is the problem. Also some varieties of cukes are more bitter than others do to breeding.

I thought I was watering a lot. They are on the same schedule as the AGs as I did not have enough time to give them their own line. That may indicate that the AGs may need more water as well. Hmmmmm something to think about. Thanks for the help and guidance.

Cornwall UK.(50N 5W)300ft.

Cucumbers go bitter if they are pollinated.Remove all male flowers before they open.Many F1 hybrid varieties only produce female flowers to avoid having to do this.
Unlike pumpkins they do not need to be pollinated to produce a fruit (unless you want seeds).

Really, they don't need a male? There are WAY too many flowers out there to try to remove them. I had no idea. I did up the water and they seem to now be growing at a frantic pace. I love the lemons right off the vine, but the st8 ones seem to give me fits.

We mostly grow greenhouse types here certainly applies to them,also the giant ones I tie the female shut on them so that it cannot be pollinated they go a bit haywire if they are.
Maybe its differant for some other types.

Why do the males come out at all then? Is this just very selective breeding on our part which has eliminated the NEED for a male but has not eliminated the CREATION of the male? Lets hope they stick to cukes!
