My corn which I started indoors & transplanted a couple weeks ago is now about 10 inches tall. I want to plant Emerite pole beans at the base of the corn to climb the corn. How tall should the corn be before planting the beans? Don't want the beans to outgrow the corn & not have anything to wrap around. Thanks.

I read somewhere that the corn should be about 18 inches tall before you plant the beans. Hope this helps

Pole beans on corn? We say knee high by the 4th of July. Plant pole beans on the days just before knee high. Cukes and gords do well in the first two rows of corn too. Fair warning....deer like both beans and corn. }o:)

Thanks Cathy & Doc. I had a good jump on the season and ate 54 Emerite pole beans yesterday and 1 ear of corn (corn raw, beans nuked.) I think the corn is about ready to harvest, not exactly sure how many days past silking to wait or if you just check it, silks are almost brown; do the kernels change color as they mature? Have a second crop that should be tassling in a couple weeks. Actually, by the 4th of July, my corn was between waist & chest high! And no deer here, I'm right in the city, just squirrels & birds.

Korney Buffalo, NY is not that far from Pennsylvania. You will see the white tailed patch eaters in due time. Pray that I am wrong. On your corn ready to eat question. Depends on the eater! It is small and tender huge and tuff in my book. The market growers shoot for the middle between the two conditions. If I want tender juicy corn I have to grow it. To check I peek. Never thought it hurt anything.
It is only a day or two difference to a week at the most.
Play with it and peek. You will soon learn the silk conditions by jock strap engineering. I usually leave a few, to harden up, for the squirrels. Love to see them stealing the goodies. They will anyway!
