Hi all,

I planted Blue Hubbards this year as a trap for the SVBs, and so far not only has it worked but also given a good place to experiment on killing the SVBs as well.

I did manage to kill the ones that got inside the vine, by injecting the vine with OrthoMax from wallmart.

Anyhow, now I got Hubbards growing, how do I know when they are ripe?

after frost when they are blue, most of mine average over 20lbs so it can be a little more than youd want to eat at one meal lol

Thanks.

I have 3 hubbard plants going, and one of them, was badly attacked by SVB early on.

I managed to kill the SVBs with an a series of OrthoMax injections, and saved about 6ft of the vine, right up to the fruit.

However, the fruit turned a darker shade of green/grey than the other hubbards, and has stopped growing.

It is about the size of a football now, and I think it may have ripened early, and a little smaller than normal, due to the loss of the growth end of the vine.

That was about a month ago, and I will examine the color of the stem, and the under belly of the fruit, as I think it may be ripe already.

Hence why I asked how to tell if they are ripe.

Might have worked out in my favor, and accidentally turned it into a "minni" hubbard.
