Looking for others who grow hops, and maybe make some home brew with them.

I found some more room in my yard, so I'm going to put in a few different varieties.

Any one want to share their growing tips? Also looking for a few hard to find varieties; Ultra, Vanguard, Sterling and Santiam.

Thad

Hi Thad -

I live in Cottage Grove and would love to meet you. I'm new to growing pumpkins. I've yet to plant my first seeds. I'd sure love to sit at the feet of the master and learn as much as I can. I'll buy you lunch. If you would email me at pamerdan@aol.com. Thank you, Dan

Dave Hancock has grown them, you might want to try calling him. They can be used in cuisine as well. Cheers, B

I grew Cascade hops several years back. I just planted them in the ground. They are a weedy vine. You should get a good crop the second year.

Honestly give them water and room to roam, and in a few years look out! Kinda like a vertical AG.

Thanks for the replies all!

There has to be more home brewers on this site! Any one out there want to share a recipe of their favorite brew?
Dan Orleck and I made a pumpkin ale this summer for our patch tour. It was our first, and we got the recipe off of a brew board. It turned out pretty well, mostly tasting like pumpkin pie. Problem was, seems like nobody drinks in our club! Dan and I did our best to drink it all, but the problem was that there were two other corney kegs of homebrew too! burp!

I can share a homemade Brew with you Thad, it was shared to me by one of the worst people in Ohio,,,Inmates,,lol.
First, steal a clear plastic garbage bag from the officers station or chow hall, or any thing you can find in the garbage that holds approx 5 gallons. Now take any fruit you can find, usually you can get this from saving fruit from your meal tray each day and also get it from their gang banger friends trays, you can also use tomato paste if you happen to be a chow hall worker. Once this is done, cut it all up into small pieces, now add some water and any kind of juice you can find and mix well inside garbage bag. But before you do this you need to steal about 200 packets of sugar, you can usually get this from the chow hall, but be careful, you need to place these sugar packets in places that you never had sugar packets before, but sneak them out of the chow hall and dont get caught!

Now once you get that back to your cell add all of it together. Now for the important ingredient, the yeast,, The next day you need to find a kitchen worker who can steal a loaf of bread for you when you go through the line for chow, but you must pay him something for it,, pay him a few debbie cakes or a night out with his cell mate, but have him kick it under the chow hall line to you when the officers are not looking. Here's there tricky part, you must hide this really good on your way out of the chow hall cause if you dont, the officers will see it very easily. Next, once you complete this task , then take that back to your cell and add the bread in , then seal everything up with just a little air getting to it and wait a week or so, but while your waiting you must hide the odor it will produce, this is important! you dont want to get busted with it right before you get a chance to drink it!,,so use baby powder or some kind of muslim oil and spread that around your cell area so it will be hard for the officers to detect the smell. Once you have done this you will have the worst tasting Ohio inmate hooch you ever drank, but will makes your bunkie look like Farra Facet back in her good years.

I have been making some how brew lately. Last batch was a generic ale much like Bud. Currently fermenting up some Rose's Rambling Red, a deep red lager with a kinda sweet malt taste, not hoppy or real bitter. Its good on a cool night 6.1% abv. If you want to talk some brewing or something shoot me an email.

Mr. Bosworth,
I do believe that you are tripping me out.
M wife is looking at me literally laughing out loud just now.

At 14 I made almost 2 gallons of homemade wine in my closet. True story.

Homebrew is so much better, but not with the same rush.

The best homebrew I made was using a Octoberfest kit.
I always use the Safale 04 yeast.Best yeast I ever used. It has a high flocculation. Makes the beer less cloudy.

Brooks stay away from that prison hooch.LOL

I really have to get back to brewing. It's been a few years.

Thad, if you're still there, I think that if you can grow pumpkins you will have no trouble with hops. After a few years of getting established you will have flowers. The problem for me when I grew them back in Nebraska was year to year variation in strength (how much resin in the buds lol). I seriously underhopped a batch and had to go back and dry hop a finished brew. If I hadn't already switched to kegs by that time I would have been screwed.

Here's a favorite recipe I brew, and guaranteed to be better than Brook's jailhouse hooch!

I've made many of these, and they appeal to all levels of beer snobness, from brewers who say "fruit beer isn't real beer" to people who say they don't like "homebrew".

Cheers!
