Every year I debated on cutting down a tree out beside my barn and use it for fence post,,, to me, it looked like a Osage orange tree because the bark had a orange tint to it.

But to my surprise, and looking it up on the net, its growing Red Mulberries! It must take about 4 years for a tree to start producing mulberry's, because there wasn't any on that tree for the past 3 almost 4 years.

The Mulberrys arnt ripe yet and are just now starting to turn puplish red, and what I was wanting to know is do people eat these?,,, If so, I wonder what homemade mulberry wine would taste like?

Brooks you just got me all nostalgic for my childhood in Missouri. Climbing a large mullberry tree like a monkey, eating the ripe ones. When they go purple and fall off easily they are ripe. You can put an old sheet under the tree and then shake the branches. The ripe ones fall off and can be sorted out from the other debris. I made some mullberry mead once but it didn't taste appreciably different from the plain stuff. Had a nice color though.

You will end up cutting the tree down in a couple years...such a dirty tree.
Birds like them...short on taste if you ask me...lotsa purple bird poop everywhere...moldy grass under the tree, purple footprints on the carpet from the kids (and adults)and an overwhelming sweet rotting smell as fruit drop coincides with the wet springs we typically get. Yup---love those mulberry trees............

Brooks, I have tasted mulberries that were really delicious, I have also had some that I spit out. How good it will taste depends upon the species (as there are several) and probably also the individual tree.

We have a really big one. Dosn't cause issues....birds normally get to it before th berrys fall.
