I have a few sunflowers that I want to keep the seeds from to plant next year. Only, I have birds eating the sunflowers as soon as they bloom. When can you pick the heads and let dry? I looked closely at one and they are still soft, have never tried to harvest sunflowers before. Thanks

Bag em early...mesh bags...they will still pollinate them selves!! The seeds take a while to mature!!! Hope this helps! Big mesh bags available at baby supply stores!!! Basinette (sp) covers?? Peace, Wayne

O'K, just put a bag over them while they are still on the plant, mesh or something like that.

How many sunflowers do you want to plant? The birds are sloppy diners and you will have plenty of seeds hitting the soil and no doubt plenty of volunteers next year.

I just noticed the earliest ones that bloomed, right below is a pile of sunflower seed shells. I don't want them to eat all of them.
