Just a quick question, do most Onion growers start their onions from seed, or do they use the actual bulb itself?

Ok, though would it be too late to start now?

I have started some at this time and they still get good size around 3 pounds or more.

It is not too late. Reimers has them in stock now.

Larry is right JA, I received an e-mail two days ago from Reimers that Kelae Sweet onions were back in stock. There are other varieties as well. West Coast seeds are right in your back yard, more or less and very reasonable.

If you really want to compete, then you are too late. But if you are just experimenting you will be fine. The right date to start is the first half of November, and yes, from seeds.

Kelsae or Ailsea are large show onions, not giant onions. They are actually used to win prizes for beauty and not size.

To win at any giant veg or onion show in Britain, you will need at least 14 lbs.

Check out Ian Paton's site to see how his onions are already doing!

For what it's worth Jordan, I called West Coast Seeds and Kelsae onions will be available as of Jan. 20. $2.99 for about 100 seeds.
