My watermellons are growing well and was wondering how long to let the secondary vines grow and if I should prune off all the tertiary vines. Any thoughts on the topic would be appreciated. Copper, Cameron, Ontario.

I am using the x-mas tree pumpkin system, but with shorter secondaries and main vine.

the only things that need to be culled are the extra watermelons. the vines don't need pruning.

I disagree with matfox. Once you have fruit set, and a good sized plant, by terminating and burying outside edges of vine growth, more energy goes into the melons(just like with pumpkins). You WILL have to remove most of the fruits, but I've grown as many as 3 100#ers on 1 plant.

Bury all the vines and prune tertiaries as well... If you wanna get a monster. I insist. Don
