We usually don't have much insect pressure this far north. next year may be different. We could still get a bitter cold snap and without snow cover it would be harder on overwintering plants and insects. Actually, a January thaw followed by -40 degrees can be the worst.

Amelio, I'm zone 3a, we are a lot colder than most growers. I've planted peas right into frozen soil in April. There is alot of winter ahead of us. -20 to -40 is still possible. Without snow, frost will go deep fast. Climate is based on a multi decadal average, not individual abnormal years.
Northern Europe is really rather mild climate wise. warmer in winter, cooler in summer, no tornadoes. Northern MN is colder than Moscow or anywhere but the coldest regions of the scandinavian countries. It does keep the insect pressure down. Our record highs are around 110 F, but we average about 15 days over 90 F each year.
