Has anyone had problems with Quail in their garden. We have always had large covey of Quail around here but they wouldn't stay on my property like they have this year. I'm not too concerned about my pumpkin plants as I will have them in cloches. My main concern is that I will have garlic coming up early and I really don't want the Quail to feed on the tender shoots. A couple years ago I set out my Small Sugar and Jack o' Lantern pumpkins and stood back and watched as Starlings bit the vines off at the ground.

I have a Quail family of ~15 wandering around our ranch. No problems from them in our garden.

I'm hoping I have no problem with these. Once the weather gets better and I'm out in the garden more ,maybe they will leave. I have more than 15 though. Probably more like 150.

I would think quail would be beneficial little bug catchers. Like mini chickens and I would welcome them in my garden

And I agree with you Linus. I'm thinking they are more seed eaters than bug catchers as they spend the entire year in the same area(no bugs in winter and people around here feed them grain in the winter). I'm not really worried about them and I kind of like them around. Just protective of my garlic.

We also have a covey here, Ive noticed no problems. They are fast little suckers when you walk up on them.

I was just out looking at my garlic bed and yes, the quail are eating the tips of the leaves that are emerging. So tomorrow I will put a barrier of sorts over the bed to keep them out. Just what I need this time of year...another project.
