well i know its a bit late,, i put some garlic. in the ground today for next season,, temps where around the 60 temps mark,,, covered with a good layer of year old grass clipping that was starting to break, down,, straw was way to expencive to buy,, 10.00 a baill here in southern utah,, any ones thoughts would be appreciated

I planted mine 4 weeks ago. but they sprouted so I just put more last week. But who knows we could have another warm winter. Oh well ya never know. til ya try.

Here in Maine I usually plant my garlic around the first weekend in Nov. You want the cloves to just put down some roots- no top growth. and I use a very light layer of mulch. This all will depend on climate and variety of garlic you are planting.

Doc,, i still live at a fairly high elevation,, tho not 6500 feet anymore ,, i think,, maybe i timed it rite,, this year,, spring will tell,, i'm at 5400 or rite close to that,, but 260 miles farther south than previous yrs,, good luck to all, Curt

KYJOE, i just bought 2 lbs of fresh garlic from the grocery store ,, broke up and planted ,, thats all i have done in past years,, does good most of the time

I agree with Dr. Greenthumb, I wait until November to plant it. I still see green tops come up before winter sets in. It seems that as long as the ground is not frozen they will grow roots and anchor themselves.
The old grass clippings should work, although if they are too far broken down, weeds may grow in it and you will lose your mulching effect. You can always add a little more mulch. Although you can go too heavy, I put mulch hay over mine last fall and in some spots it was a little too thick and I had to help the young shoots break through the hay come spring.

I planted mine yesterday. Well composted cow manure and a light sprinkling of agricultural lime, tilled in then a half teaspoon of bone meal to the planting holes. I had to move my patch to a full sunlight location this year, to maximize growth.

Darren, That is normal to see sprouts. They will be fine. They may get killed back but should re-sprout come spring.
