Subject: long carrots

I am thinking about planting long carrots in vertical 6 inch plastic tubes filled with compost and loamy soil. I am wondering if I should drill a few holes down the pipe to let the soil get some air or would that lead to too much drying of the soil? Ideas anyone? Thanks!
