Yes it's a great sight to see them popping up!! They like to fertilized in the leaf growth stage, using fish and seaweed here and an organic product called Wegeners. Good Luck!!

What kind of garlic are you guys growing? My father used to grow around 60 different kinds on our farm. My favorite to eat is probably the Rocambole group (specifically Spanish Roja). We like cooking with varieties from the porcelain group like Romanian Red cuz they're more pungent and the large cloves are super easy to peel.

I am personally a porcelain fan myself, mainly for the size of the cloves the heat and the fact they store much longer. I also grow a few of the Rocambole varieties, there are a few with 5-6 large cloves and have some nice flavors. If you are not growing from seed yet, you should consider starting. It is a 5 year commitment but well worth it, and if you do each stage every year, you will always have the best clean seed available to plant every year. I am currently on year 5 and look forward to seeing the results in July. Love the Garlic Season!!!

I'm not a garlic expert but, I've been growing garlic for over 25 years. I plant my garlic October 15th in Pennsylvania and dig it up the first week of August. I usually grow between 200 and 300 pounds and I sell almost all of it to the County Farm Market. They pay me $2.00 per pound and sell it for between $4.00 and $5.00 per pound.... It's my beer money. After planting it in October, other than covering it with grass clippings and leaves, there's not much else I do to the patch.

LIpumpkin. if I can make a suggestion, find someone that will give you a bunch of homegrown garlic. Save some to plant in the Fall and the rest---clean it up, grind in up in your processor, adding some olive oil and store it in pint jars. I usually do about four pints per year. I found that garlic either sprouts by January or dries up. Nothing is better than making a pot of pasta and adding crushed garlic to it. Hope my comments help.......

I planted German Brown and Early Italian Red, back in the Fall. It all looks healthy and green.

After I harvest my garlic and dry it down, I put the finished bulbs in onion sacks and hang them in my basement. We eat the garlic into the Summer.

If we see any of the bulbs starting to sprout, we use them first or give them to family/friends to use.

Just under 2000 plants here, which includes those I have been growing from seed for the past 4 years. All are up and looking good, cultivated soil around them, and drenched with fish, seaweed and Rootshield WP.

Stawecki, thanks for tip on storing crushed garlic in jars, going to give that a try this season for sure. Still eating last years harvest here, but supply is getting very low.... Good Luck Garlic Lovers!!
