Does anyone know of a good deer repellent (either store bought or homemade)? We had a major issue with deer and rabbits last year and whatever we used didn't work. We had sprays, granules sprinkled around the perimeter, even aluminum pie pans tied to stakes to make noise in the night. But no matter what we tried we would wake up each morning with more and more plants missing. HELP!!!!

You could try....human and or dog hair sprinkled about.... Bars of ivory soap....chili powder spray....coyote urine...motor oil( messy)...a fence....or my personal favorite, a hunting blind, gun, and a six pack

Hey Rkdarr, I was just looking for something else and saw this post. Hope you see it,

If it has been tried for deer - I have tried it. We live on an island with a BIG overpopulation of them, Coastal deer are small but seem to have big appetites.
As to soap bars - use Irish Spring- even the deer don't like the smell. They will stay away from it but only a few feet. As in they may eat the other side of a small apple tree so tie it in the middle, keep it in the box so it doesn't melt away in the first rain or two.
You can mix blood meal with water and spray, it works but doesn't stay through much rain.
The best product of all is a brand named called Bobbex. It works, flat out works - it stinks, but it works. Buy the concentrate and get a small spray bottle that you use only for it.
Or like Porkchop said -spray lead. I got quite a collection of racks on my pump house. Yummy and organic!

PS- The Bobbex , or blood meal, works well for rabbits also.

These guys make a deer repellent to go on 1080 poison, It is a non toxic, natural product. Not sure if it available to public or international.

Bobbex does work very well but it's expensive and has to be reapplied every two weeks or so. If you're going to spend money and have to do it over and over, why not just put up a fence?

Last year I had deer going through my cantaloupe patch so bad it looked like hwy 5 traffic north out of LA. Someone told me to put a battery operated radio under a galvanized bucket that played anything 24/7, so I did on a medium volume to conserve batteries..well no more deer. I used a 1 gallon bucket took the handle off, knocked two holes in the bottom opposite sides and hung the radio in the bucket upside down to keep the rain and sun off of it....absolutily no more deer and the patch is at least 1000 yards from the house down by a creek. Maybe the scare crow and the yard light helped in combination, lol. good luck. Heres the set up: http://www.bigpumpkins.com/Diary/DiaryView.asp?season=2012&grower=60484&action=L
