I recently purchased mum plugs and have them planted. when I purchased them I was told they are sprayed with a chemical to make them branch out and become fuller without pinching. should I trust this or should I continue to pinch? also living in PA, when should pinching be stopped to make sure I have blooms in the fall??

Sounds like some kind of bloom booster.quick easy way my grandad showed me to take care his .I get my weedeater & lightly shape it& cut tips.every time a branch is cut it doubles up blooms .so let it reform out bout week& half trimmings.we usually stop end of July Aug for fall bloom. That's in south tho

The chemical is a plant hormone that will cause the plant to grow slower and to be bushier. So growth out of the gate will be very compact and bushy. As time goes on the growth hormones effects will lessen and the plant will resume more normal growth. I would give them a pinch now and see how they do. They may need to be pinched one more time. I would stop pinching around the first of August and let it do it's thing from there on out.
