Do you use bottom heat when stating onions from seed ? Also how do you determine hours of light needed ? Thanks for any help.

Onions don't need any extra heat to germinate. They will germinate fine in 60 degree soil. For light I would just mimic nature. Last year I left my onions under constant light, 24 hours a day. After I did that I became worried that I would trigger them to bulb too early. (Long day onions bulb in response to long days) The onions still did fine for me but they weren't spectacular either. However, I am not sure if that is because of the 24 hour light I gave them for the first couple of months or the fact that in June we received very little rain. Water is crucial during bulb development.

Thanks for the input big moon - we'll keep experimenting - third year trying our own seeds - getting better.....slowly.
