I,m trying giant cabbage this year. I am wondering when to start them so they will be ready for the Oct. weigh-offs. Also, are there any special needs (fertilizers, amounts of water daily, etc.) the cabbage plants require to reach their full potential. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Phil

I know of 2 kinds of giant cabbage. The Northern Giant and the O.and S. Cross. I grew both and ended up with the same results. I planted my seedlings out on the first of June, and Harvested the cabbages Sept. 1st. The heads were 18" across, at that time, but due to cracking, I harvested them.
They would have made another 2-3 weeks easy. The plants were watered every day until the 15th of Aug.. Then every third day. I believe this is why they cracked. I fertilized once a week.
The white butterflies were terrible here, so watch for them. This year I will cover with remay or something.
We had trouble with cutworms on our normal cabbages but they didnt' bother the big ones at all.
This was our first year growing them. I'd sure like to hear from someone else.

I am trying giant cabbage this year too. I think I will plant the Late flat dutch variety. The heads get up to 12" across and weigh 12+ pounds. I heard you can plant early variety seeds about 50 days before the last frost and late varieties in the beggining of June.

Sounds to me like you may have over nitrated them. Treat them like a pumpkin when the head starts to form. A good low number organic slow release 5-3-2 in the ground two weeks before planting will enable a stronger total plant.
Finish them with high quality foliar fish, kelp and molasses. This will excite your biological critters which will enable the natural roots to find and use available Calcium and Phos. for a stronger plant over all.

If you have good quality aerobic compost make tea and call it compost to support all biological functions. You can not over apply tea but it must be aerobic tea...full of fat and sassy bacteria and other living critters.

When do the heads form on giant cabbages and how long will they need to grow before harvesting?
