Chicken wire laid down flat..buried in the soil. Just remember it is there...It does a number on the tiller tines, and is difficult to get out.

Should have read closer...For a whole field provide them with there own stash...I have never had a huge issue with animals stealing seeds..

Shannon,
Do you think such a chicken wire would also work for pumpkin plants? Laying it down a couple inches below the soil surface against moles, mice, etc.? What should be the diameter of the netting? Will it disturb the roots/stump?
Thanks,
Martin

I would make a cylinder and bury it. The problem is most of our patches are healthier than the neighbors lawn....Providing a smorgasbord for them little pesky moles. I know one growers dad that has a trophy wall in the garage I believe for his Mole Kills...And they think us pumpkin growers are crazy.

Years ago, ever when I planted sunflowerseeds, the wild pigeons knew exact the point where they have to dig them, one day I plant and next day all were lost. Since I germinate sunflowerseeds in peatpots I have big sunflowers in the garden.
