Despite complaints about initial costs and inertia towards new methods, I think this is the reality of the fresh-market agribusiness. I think this is well recognized reality in Europe and Asia, but less so in the USA? I thought this video was well rounded and insightful for a laymans-type video:

It is a good video, You can see why some nations are heavily employing plasticulture. It provides for greater year round food security. It also brings with it a high level of control. You can greatly control and modify many/most aspects of growing a crop. It is really great for being able to utiliize biological predatory insects and mites. It keeps the beneficical predators right where you want them. It is a thought provoking video. It opened my eyes up to a few things.
