Anyone in the northeast heard of a possible frost either tonite or tomorrow night? My plants need to get out of the cloches, but I dont want to lose them to frost the first night I take them off. Vines are over 4 ft long now and up against the other end of my cloche, needing to spread thier wings to fly.

I don't know about your area Rock, but Northeast Ohio is expecting frost tonight.

Over here people lost all their young veggies due to 25 F a few nights ago. Pumpkin plants store a lot of water, frost will kill them immediately. Better a crowded plant at night than a dead plant next morning. At least keep them protected from 10 o´clock at night to 9 in the morning for some more days.

Rock,

I think I'd leave them in the cloches a few more nights. It's supposed to hit 40 here tonight, with a possibility of frost in low lying areas. The local weather man has learned to cover his ass because he's been wrong sooo many times before!

You can always turn on the sprinkler in an emergency and buy five to ten degrees from the presence of 40 degree water. That's living on the edge but we are all the time anyway...aren't we?

I spent nearly 2 hours tonite adding another 2 ft of space for my crowded houses. The plants had gotten cramped up against the far side of the cloche, so I took that end of the cloche, and removed the wall, and gave the plants atleast 3 to 4 more days in the shelters. I believe we will be in the clear after that.

Strange part is we have had 60 degree nights for the past 3 weeks, and now that June is upon us, the weather dropped to 40 or lower.. wierd weather. I just went to see the movie "Day after Tomorrow", and while I was watching it, I thought about the wild weather we endure as pumpkin growers. Anyhow...

I also covered the cloches with blankets to stop some of the downward cold that may be hitting us. This is my best overall start on record, and I dont want to mess this up!

I made it through the night Rocky! I set the alarm for two hour segments of sleep....got up and determined we were OK.

Being further North you may have been closer to the edge. I'm guessing you got through too. Hope so..anyway.

Rocky,
We had a low of 31F last night and it is suppose to be a little cooler tonight. It didn't get any lower than 42F last night in the cloches, so I think things will be okay tonight too. We'll be prepared and keep our fingers crossed. What's the worst that can happen, my mud might freeze? :-)

I'm at 3000+ elevation and we've had steady 60+ degree nights for over two weeks now. Day temps at 75 or so and averaging about 1/4" afternoon rain showers a day.
Puuuurrrrrfect....

Another trick is to spray the frost off with water before the sun hits it....

One night down, another one to go.. Supposed to get down to 30 here tonite, got 2 blankets on each cloche, plants look awesome.. If we get through tonite, tomorrow we should be out of the woods. I plan on taking a few digital pics tomorrow after I take off the cloches. I gave the 898 Knauss an extra 18 inches of space, and in just over 24 hours, the darn thing is already touching the cloche. It had been curled up from being up against the end of the cloche, and now it is unfurled like getting out of the backseat of a car after a 4 hour drive. Looks awesome.
