Distribution of seedless mini-watermelons -- the "personal" size -- is rolling right along. You'll be seeing a lot of them this summer.
According to a Kroger spokesman at the Blue Ash produce-buying office, Kroger stores began introducing mini-watermelons last summer in a small way.

By now, all the Kroger divisions that cover consumers from Dayton, Ohio, to Louisville, Ky., and beyond the tri-state are stocking the mini-melons with the bright red centers and very thin white inner rinds.

Brand names to look for are Pureheart or Timco watermelons, at least at Kroger's, the only chain we checked. But all supermarkets across the country will be hopping on this bandwagon because (1) seedless produce is hot (we give you grapes), and (2) any watermelons smaller and lighter than bowling balls are easy to carry to the car, a cinch to fit into the fridge and sure to be used up way before a small family (or single person) is sick of eating watermelon.

Now when is a Northeastern food chain going to start selling these?

I'm not a watermelon fan, but I've seen these in a couple of local grocery stores. Real cute little things.
