Hey Jeff,

This is our second year playing with Peanuts. We have 2 Peanut bushes going. A pretty modest start, but one that grows if we don't let the "Show-N-Tell" crowd pick all of 2005's starts again like last year! LOL We'll be more careful & have a larger crop next year if all goes as planned.

Our plants might be too close together at 12". I'm not sure.

They like loose sandy soils with a pH of 6.0 - 6.5. Rhizobium soil inoculant is dusted onto peanut seeds by commercial growers who are starting in "new peanut soils". This gets the Nitrogen fixing legume doing it's thing. I 've heard of folks using brewers yeast, but I doubt this would really work. We haven't used any such inoculant this year or last. In time the inoculant will develope on it's own. A good thing here in CT since no one grows peanuts, so no one stocks peanut inculant.

There are 3 phases of growth. Pre-flower/flower, Pegging/Pod-set, & Kernel-fill. Gradually reduce water during Kernel-fill, though peanuts like water early.

After flowering, the plant sends down a "peg" from the flowers location that will grow into a peanut. So don't cultivate closely after flowering.

The supplemental fertility recommendations I have seen call for ZERO supplemental Nitrogen once plants are going, 1 lb of Phosphorous, & 2 lbs of Potassium without a soil test in hand. Too much K is bad.

Google the words "peanut production guide" in exact order & have a read. There's quite a bit out there

Could peanuts grow in Ohio? I've never grown them because I always assumed I couldn't. Maybe I'll have to try peanuts next year.
