2nd year and i,ve got the bug. Summers 90 to 95degrees, and not as much sun light as most of you since i'm close to Ral, N.C. Should I cut most or all of the trees on the west side and can anyone tell me how to get the compass reading where the sun will go down around mid afternoon in July Aug.Thanks from a grower who has a friend that says he will eat pumpkin if its 400lbs or more.

It can be quite a challenge to extend daylength especially in the backyard garden.
Also where you live, minimizing sun intensity at midday with shade cloth would probably net you the greatest gain for the dollar spent.
Personally, I would focus on the eastern horizon to maximize the morning sun. Then I'd look for shade cloth straight over head combined with misters to reduce summer sun related heat stress.
That said, if you can also remove the southwestern sun blockers I'd do that too.
