Iv'e noticed alot of new names here at BP so I would like to re-post a couple of informative links that were very helpful in making my pesticide choices.

Ron,
Huge news. I've been meaning to post this. Thanks for the prod!
ARENA¢â is the newest & best yet so let's update those old posts.
There is a new insecticide that is only available in limitted supply this year. It's even better (faster & broader spectrum) than Imidacloprid & lasts at least as long.
CAS: [C(E)]-N-[(2-chloro-5-thiazolyl)methyl]-N¡Ç-methyl-N¡È-nitroguanidine
Clothianidin was originally developed by the Japanese company Takeda Chemical that called it Dantop. Like Merit, it is a neonicotinoid group 4A nitroguanidine insecticide (it kills bugs the same way). The makers of Merit (Bayer) were so worried about it that they bought the company to keep it from ruining their sales. The Federal government decided that Bayer should not own every neonicotinoid insecticide & Bayer had to sell this molecule.
A new startup company (Arysta of Tokyo is parent to Arvesta Life Science in the USA) bought Clothianidin & renamed it ARENA¢â for Turf & Ornamental use & CELERO¢â & CLUTCH¢â.
ARENA¢â works preventively just like Merit. But due to it's unique molecular structure, Clothianidin is also fast & powerful enough to offer curative properties too. At the same rates (.2-.3 lbs active ingredient per acre) ARENA¢â will kill even mature insects (Merit only kills juveniles). At rates as low as .1 lbs Ai/A, dr. Shetlar (OSU Entomolgist) & Dr. Pat Vittum (UMass) have found that ARENA¢â works just as well as Merit at 2-3 times the rate!!!
Bayer still has certain agriculture rights to Clothianidin & they sell it for seed treatment under the trade name Poncho 600.

In case you're wondering....YES...I do sell it. Waiting for our initial supply right now. ;o)

Wow. So much for trying to copy existing text. All of the (TM)'s turned to jibberish.
Glenn,
Merit is used prior to insect arrival & is targetted to kill juvenile insects since it is weak on adults.
Arena is strong enough to kill large populations of adult insects in the same target group so it can be applied later if that is what the user wishes to do.
Merit is hated (and restricted) in New York because it cannot be used in a true IPM program. Arena can be used in IPM.....But it will be a few more years before it is registered there so you're out of luck regardless.
Since they are both neonicotinoids, they both have the same residual activity.

Hey Frank,
Like a lot of new products, Arena's initial product offering is sized for a "primary market"...meaning HUGE.
40 oz sells for $700 & treats 3.13 Acres at the heaviest annual rate allowed by law.
This should change as soon as awareness increases & demand for smaller packaging exists.
The same thing happened with Merit when it was new.
