What kind of hay? Basic bedding hay will contain all sorts of weed seeds like Timothy & Orchard Grass. Better feed hay might spread Alfalfa, etc.
Some cereal crops get harvested & the reulting stalks are made into a clean mulch hay.
Composted hay might be OK too.
Either way go easy since too much hay might rob the soil of Nitrogen during it's decomposition.

I brought in a whole bail of hay from my buddies farm, Even Alga mats, thought I was doing something good. I was for the weed seeds I introduced. That's been 4 years ago. Still seeing grass I never had before and dont let go to see. I wont do that again!!!

I have found that squash bugs LOVE to hide in hay/straw when used as mulch around plants.
