What determines the actual shape, besides genetics of course.I mean some beautiful genetically shaped pumpkins turn into lumpy blobs,is it inconsistent water ,temperature or sunlight or nutrient issues, in early development.Just wondering because I have 2 pumpkins on the same vine that don't even close to resembling each other

wish I knew this answer, I'm growing a 1161 Rodonis this year that doesnt even come close to what Quinns 1161 grew him last year as far as shape goes, his was a perfect round shaped pumpkin that went over 1500 plus lbs, mine is just the opposite as far as the shape goes. Weight wise Im not sure yet but I doubt mine goes over 1500lbs, but ya never know?,,lol.( I know!,, wishful thinking on my part ,, Ha!)

They're like kids, some are beautiful and some you wonder what the hell happened. I culled one off today that looked like it was going to be a five lobed wheel. Others on the same plant look normal. When I grew this one in the past it produced long barrel shaped fruit. You get what you get and you don't throw a fit. As my daughter is fond of saying.

so the thinking is its all genetics that determine the shape, no hot periods followed by days of cooler temps (50's) , or days of 12 hr sun followed by weeks of cloudy weather or even an uneven watering. That doesn't cause uneven growth thus the lumpy appearance..I'm just curious because some pumpkins out there look great and mine don't ..lol.
