What is a respectable pumpkin grown from store-bought AG seeds? Also, what could a "heavy hitter" get out of store-bought seed?

When I used to grow store bought seeds, they never grew over 200 pounds. I didn't really know all the tricks yet either. I feel their potential is very limited unless they are named seeds. Where you know the cross. I guess you could get lucky and get some seeds that are good. Not in my experience though.

I read somewhere on here of a 1079 pounder being grown on a store bought seed.

200-300 pounds is outstanding for a seedrack 'Dill's Atlantic Giant' seed.

You will get a big halloween pumpkin probably. 70-100 is more like it if you've never grown large pumpkins before.

If the seeds were purchased at Lowe's then they were produced by Dill. These would have the same genetic potential as anything else but was likely open pollinated so getting other growers to get behind the progeny is unlikely even if you do pop a big one.

Thanks all. I'm just trying to gauge my efforts to see if my patch and techniques could support a decent size pumpkin if I get good seed next year. This is my first year and my plant has two pumpkins, one about 150 and the other 130.

I grew a 303 pounder from a store bought dill's ag seed last year in my first year. Really all depends on how you approach the growing. I have learned in the past 2 seasons, that hard work pays off. The pumpkins only grow themselves to a certain point. After that it is what you put into it.

Jeff, for what it's worth, here's my opinion: if it's your first year and you get to the end of the season with a pumpkin, then you are a success.

Good point! The powdery mildew just showed up this last weekend so I've not made it to the end of the season yet (unless this is it).
