Like I said in another post I've never tried "giants" but I have grown crookneck squash about every year for the past 25. I've never had deer bother them. Now young beans, corn and greens are another story.

Ha. A picture really is worth.....well, you know. So do you guys fence your patch? Pie pans? Human hair?

I'm an organic guy. Not because I'm a tree-hugger or anything but because I'm too cheap to buy chemicals and have access to all sorts of free....I mean....organic approved stuff.

the only way I was able to keep the deer out is with deer netting. Make sure you're at the 8ft height, that's the height they walk away from.
Now, how do I get rid of moles? I feel like caddy shack!!!

6' high 6 strand electric fence is best. They might test it once or twice but they soon learn to avoid it. Small bars of soap, like you get at a hotel work as a repellant. Shotgun slug, muzzleloader ball, and broadhead arrow help if you have a crack shot like my son.

Old Cane,

Milk will help control powdery mildew but every other "organic" control will cost more than chemicals for equal performance.

Deer....Nothing cheap works...Period.

Hmmm. Yeah, I shoot all I can. My best year was 11.

Well, organically speaking, what's cheaper than free?

If I saw deer in my patch and had a gun then we would have a really big dinner of venison. Last year they got into my tomatoes once, this year they left my garden alone. Next year I will be growing pumpkins - pie pumpkins, Connecticut field, and a couple AG to try and break the 100 pound mark.

I know what you mean but before everybody thinks we're a bunch of drunken hillbillies, we need to tell them we know when deer season is (and it ain't during the summer). And if the limits are the same as they have been for a couple of years we can harvest around 300 deer a year. But that means a really, really, really big freezer.
