Im was cleaning up the yard, after the long winter and came across my bonfire pit. So my question is , is spreading ashes from the fire pit over my garden a good idea? If you have any thoughts please let me know . Thanks

They will adjust pH in your garden. As long as you need to rasie your pH you will be fine. I put ashes in all of winter 2008 to help rasie pH, but now my pH is fine so no more will be added. They might add other things depending on what was burned...i.e type of wood...I just broadcast them on my lawn now all winters ince New England soil tends to be acidic...

I did a site search on wood ashes and it seems opinions vary quite a bit when it comes to using wood ashes. One thing I couldn't find though was an application rate, like say, N pounds per 100 sq. ft. I was thinking just a light dusting of it would be fine for my patch since my pH is falling. Thanks for any advice! Brian
