I have a 13' X 16' patch for growing pumpkins. I was thinking about using a flag pattern to grow in my patch. With that would it still be a good idea to cut every other side vine as it grows into the half christmas tree formation?

P&P, I was looking at your diary yesterday and thought "the best way to grow in that small area would be in flag pattern".

I grew a 728 lb pumpkin last year on flag pattern in a space that was 25' x 15' (20' main and 15' secondaries) with pumpkin at about 12'

In your case, I would grow the main along the 16 foot stretch and have secondaries on one side in the 13 food wide area....get your pumpkin anywhere past the 11' mark on the main vine (maybe a backup on a secondary) and then terminate the main once pumpkin is set and growing.

Good luck!!

Thanks. With your flag pattern did you keep ever side vine on the growing side or did you remove every other one?

With limited space, I only removed secondaries from one side and did not trim or thin the other side.

In 2003 I grew a 760 pound pumpkin on a flag pattern plant in an area similar to yours. I angled the vines away from main to gain more length, and turned the main past the pumpkin to form the last " stripe" in the flag.

WOW, flag pattern, w/ secondaries from both sides still growing on the same side of the flag!!!! Sounds like vines might be a lil close together? But, Grow em BIG!!! Nu Jerzy, is different than Kentucky!!! LOL Peace, Wayne
