i bury at the spot where the leaf stem meets the main. thats where the tap roots will grow.
i leave the area in between the tap root areas exposed to air and sun.--i do the same with side vines.
always use at least one 2-3ft bamboo stake a few inches in from each vine tip to hold in position and assist thevine from rolling over on windy days. never bury the vine tips-ever.
it takes a few days and up to a week to get the main vine down and laying on the ground. it is a gentle process and rushing the process and/or forcing the vine to much on any given day will end with a snaped main vine. sometimes the main is 2-3ft long before its firmly on the ground and running.
lots of top growers in the ohio valley giant pumpkin growers club. you need to hook up with that club.
