when are these things eating I see the holes in leaves, but no bug.
what is cencidered the best treatment, insecticide

Mine seem to eat during the morning hours and die shortly thereafter.

I use an insecticide like Merit which contains imidacloprid. That is a systemic and kills them if they bite the plant. Apply once a month. If you want to kill them when they land then you have to use a contact insecticide..I think the active ingredient is bifenthrin? One example is Talstar.

You can also use a garlic spray such as Mosquito Barrier to repel them from your garden.

Feeding at night could just be slugs.

Set a shallow saucer level with the soil. Fill it with beer. If the saucer is swimming with slugs the next morning then we buy some slug bait.
