just a reminder to get that jungle cleared out around the base of your plants.

this is the time of the year where you should be carefully cleaning the buried mains off, plus trimming leaves and weeds out from around the base.
that base needs good air flow around it along with exposure to the sun.

Why clean the buried mains off Pap?

Isnt SVB season still around and doesnt that help protect the main from getting infected along with sprayings?

We're talking about preventing foaming stump. Am I right, pap?

Ron's article on preventing foaming stump in the last SNGPG newsletter was simply great.

we use several systemic insecticides @ fungicides so im not concerned with beetles and borers as much as some growers might be.
i have said many times that pumpkin vines should grow naturally on top of the soil and not below it.
we do need to bury some because the plants stalks and leaves would not stand up to wind and rain if we did not however, once the taps get established and the vines are secured to the ground ?, id rather see the vines uncovered for better health reasons.
the main is especially good to be able to inspect daily ( for ant possible problems ,etc)and you cant do that if its covered with soil.

I read about the clearing of the stump area, but i thought you wanted to keep it out of the sun and rain.I see alot af people cover the stump with a table.. yes/no ??

I cleaned out my stump area, trimmed some leafs. As reminded by Sgt. PAP of the United States Marine Core, "OORAH". (joking) I did clear out the stump area.

the sun is a good thing for the base of plant.air flow and sun will hopefully keep the base healthier and happier .theres no guarentee attached to that statement though.
high heat and excessively hot soils are starting to raise hell with the plants health even earlier then most years..

if your in an area where your getting a lot of rain they yes i would cover the base during reain storms.
