Lot's of folks seem to build a bed of fine grained (Play) sand, (seems to usually be white in color). As Frank stated, this process is started early!!! How, is prbly up to yer inventiveness...start early, and add sand as the pkn grows, or place 5' x 5' sheet of mill fabric down early and watch yer giant, grow awl over it!!! LOL Peace, Wayne
PS...the idea is to put something under yer kin, that will allow water to drain, (reducing chance of bottom rot) and to keep the kritters from nesting under it!! (kritters could eventually cause damage on the underside!!!

Mill Fabric. We put two pieces under the fruit as early as possible, this allows the fruit to spread out (grow) on the fabric, while allowing water to pass through and not pool up on the surface rotting the fruit, rodents cannot chew through it and come up from the bottom, and the two layers allow you to gently mover the fruit as necessary sliding one piece over the other.

Wayne, Tom, or Frank, I used a piece of plywood and sand over it last year, but I'd like to try the mill fabric next year. I recall reading in a post on here a while back that the fabric has 2 different sides (textures) and you are only supposed to use one while alawys having the other face down? I have never seen the stuff so could be way off. Thanks

will geo-textile fabric as used in road contruction (underlayment, silt fence fabric) work for this?
