At present my plant which looks healthy is planted in a 2 meter square pit and I have been watering the whole pit almost once a day with about 5-10L of water (an estimate of volume of the can).

Erring on the side of caution I have left it two days as I feel it may be too much at the moment. The vine is just about to touch down and I have pinched of one or two male flowers. Could the production of the flowers this early on be a sign of stress from over watering?

If so is there any long term damage and would a more moderate watering routine keep me on the straight and narrow.

I don't like to water too much early in the season. I want the plant to have to send out a good root system to seek out water. Basically I only water early when they show signs of stress. Plus I ran into root rot problems from too much water and had to install a drainage ditch system to keep them from getting too wet. Watering is more critical once the fruit starts growing.

When you say that 'watering is more critical once the fruit starts growing' do you mean in the sence that it needs more and frequent watering?

It would seem that watering, such a basic task can be done so wrong

Keep them moist but not flooded, keep the plant wanting for nothing....Do a lil diggin and really see how wet IZ that soil...just dont look on top......Check it out.....
