I have 2 plants planted in a 400sqft area. Would I be better off only growing one plant and setting 2 pumpkins or grow 2 plants and set 1 per plant ? Maybe next year I can get more room but this is all I have this year

If your goal is to grow the biggest pumpkin possible I say 1 plant, 1 kin.
If 2 pumpkins is more important to you than a thousand pounder, I would say 1 plant 2 kins. 400' is not a lot of space for 2 plants.

I agree that 400 sq/ft is small for two plants.

Big pumpkin but previous years the one I kept just quit growing so I thought if I had two maybe one would keep going.

we grow in a patch that is 900 sq feet, 4 plants last year, a 637 greenie on a 150 sq foot plant, 736 pounder, 1120 dmg uow and 1120 all on 200 square foot plants. 2 sides of the patch are used for garden veges and tall corn a sunflowers or about 4 feet by 35 on one side and 4 feet by 30 on the other........so our pumpkin growing area is under 800 square feet

i have learned and see many fasinating things over the course of twenty two years of gardening and giant pumpkin growing.
tomatoes-potatoes-egg plant-peppers-etc, never amaze , they just produce, we pickum and eatum.
giant pumpkins, green squash and other giant veggies on the other hand are a constant source of amazement, especially pumpkins.
its a hobby where you are only limited by your immagination. i have see big pumpkins on small plants, small pumpkins on big plants, slow starts with big finishes , fast starts with not so big finishes and great starts with no finish at all.----its a very long season and anythings possible on the road to the scales.
once after terminating an entire plant up to the pumpkin (because of disease)a pumpkin grew from 475 to 950 with a small piece of main and a couple sides after the fruit-about 125 sq ft, so anything is possible. i have also see pumpkins stop growing in mid august only to still be sound well past november.
the best advise i could give new growers is to enjoy the experience, read and learn from people that know what they are talking about, and always remember --- its only a pumpkin.

That's impressive Matt.

I've also posted this before, but gives hope to those growing in small areas.
