As I'm new to this, I don't know if this is bad. Should I get rid of them? Do they harm the plant?

A couple years ago I had an ant problem too. I didn't think anything of it until I saw the aphid population explode. The ants harvested a sweet liquid out of them and kept the aphids on my plant by cutting off their wings. If an aphid drops to the ground ants will carry it back up to your plant. The ants will protect aphids from natural enemies (ladybugs, lace wings)...so it's better to keep their #'s down.

So the ants have created their own slaves.

More like a primative agricultural system.
Imagine what tiny milking stools they must use...
