The skin on the stem side of my pumpkin is getting a cantaloupe type texture. Is this just because I haven't been covering it or is it some sign of disease or rot?

Cantaloping is genetic(usually). It forms on the stem end and blossum ends first. If the fruit is growing still the cantaloping isnt disease related.

I have heard cantaloping fruit tends to weigh more. Sucks though if you are growing for looks.

Cantaloped skin on a pumpkin is awesome. It usually meana you have a heavy pumpkin. Orange pretty pumpkins are okay but I prefer heavy and ugly...lol
