Hi there!!! I was wondering about something.....when you bury your vines are you supposed to add soil on top of them or dig a trench to bury them in? At what point do you worry about disturbing roots if you go with the trench method?
Thanks!

either way works for me. if you trench ahead of the vine there won`t be any roots to disturb.

Either way works just fine. Ive found that treching prevents erosion of the soil, which will happen over time, exposing the vines again. Trenching is a more permanent solution. I have found roots when trenching by the main tip, so when trenching you may want to stay a few feet ahead of the tips.

Thank you guys!!! I've basically trenched as well but have occasionally run into a root...but I'll try to stay well ahead to the growing end.

do you snip off all those string roots that come off the vine when you train the vine down the trench.

Hi Geo Dome. Do you mean the tendrils, those green branches with the several fingers on the end that wrap around anything they can get their hands on? I have been doing that the past few years now...they really do seem to get in the way of vine burying...but I wonder if it opens the vine up for disease? Anybody have suggestions?

Might give you a tad more holding power in a blow! If they are mean I wack 'em and dust them with Captan.

doug, cut the tendrils off in the morning and by the afternoon the wound has healed and you can bury them, or you can trim thim in the evening, and bury the vines the next day, but make sure you give the wound time to heal before it is buried

I stuck four pix in my diary....waiting for the holliday posting schedule to take place. Pix # 89 through # 92 shows what I do. They will show up sometime this weekend.
I do my work gently in the morning which is contrary to what I have been coached to do. Evening or late afternoon gives you a bit safer time to move those vines around.

Just don't push and pull on them in the morning hours when they are definately more likely to break or stress from movement.

I dust all cuts or terminations with captan and put them down immediately. A half of a day wait after the cut would be better but I must be out of the heat by ten or eleven o'clock. I'm an old buzzard. To dumb to not do this. :)

OOPS!!! Last four pix on trenching are #99 to #102 when they show up. Delay expected due to holliday process.
