Is it really worth the time Collecting and putting egg shells in the patch?

Put them in the compost pile with the other ingredients .

Crushing the egg shells in a blender or old coffee grinder and spreading them in your compost will help the worms to reproduce.

Don't have a compost pile, I already have the dogs running in circles and they get smaller and smaller each year that the garden grows.

It just more work and space when I can get tons of great compost from the city. I'm just throwing them in the patch is this wrong to do?

Darren...no its not worth the time and effort.

Darren, I have had little luck composting. I do save egg shells and they go in the planting hole and in the bag of goodies when I brew AACT. When I'm done brewing the contents of the bag are dumped in the garden.

Not all city composting facilities are the same...dont tarnish their reputation just because you have a narrow opinion of your own.

Thank you; but, I have heard the story's and your right, when are our city started doing compost it wasn't very good now they got it right. They test it for herbicides. So don't right off the all city's I have been using it on my veg's for years.

Peace Wayne had some trouble a while back with his city's compost and won't use it again. I used one here last year and its nutrient levels and ph were right on par and I will be using again. Since these giants are so sensitive, you can test the compost ahead of time or at least check the ph. Many places already do an analysis ahead of time as well.

Just a note if you are composting, putting the pile in a sunny area helps with getting the heat up to where you want it.

I am in the wont use city compost group. I know what gets thrown into the compost makers they use here and some of it aint that pretty.

I have a 5 gallon bucket in my kitchen that I use to put my coffee grounds in, and I just throw my egg shells in also when I cook.Then when full add to garden or compost pile.If I have a lot of shells(if large baking prodjects are being done)I'll dry them and run through food proccessor.It grinds them into a powder.I either spread in garden or put in bucket of water for a week or to and spray on plants or soil.It can't hurt.Neptune sells crab shells,so why not egg shells?!

My county landfill uses city sludge in their composting process, which seem to introduce high levels of non-goodness!!! In no way shape or form, am I condemning awl city/county composting places...just sayin...know what yer gettin!!! Peace, Wayne

Tractor Supply Company ( TSC ), Bomgaars in the
midwest has fifty pound bags of egg shells (chitin)
spelling its late!, ready ta use CHEAP. no need to compost.
Neptunes crab shells are $44 for 12 pounds,a
little mark up there.

From october-march last year I put 3100 pounds of
coffee grounds on 45'X75' patch,about a pound per
square foot. My fall soil test hasnt showed up yet.
My kins didnt have the jitters but where up all night.
I needed a log chain to hold back the growth this spring,
the N didnt impede the growth but it impelled it. 18' foot
sets,the plants grew too fast, I screwed up and didnt
apply bloom booster early enough to keep up with the plant
growth, rookie mistake. These two kins were harvested
Augest 11 th for the state fair.
I say I lost around 14 days of kin growth from not havin
the bloom booster applyed sooner.

i have picked up many a shell from a church breakfast crushed them with a 2x4 and tossed them in the patch
