The goal is to make an artificial "topsoil" as deep as possible. Some growers prefer to use a broadfork and loosen and turn the soil 14 inches deep. Some growers use no till techniques and add deep layers of ammendments on top of the soil. Most growers till 6-8 inches deep some plow 10-12 inches deep and a few will deep rip up to 2 ft deep to breakup hard pan.

I'm a new grower and just finished breaking ground on my patch. I tilled an average of 6 inches.

The challenge I always seem to have is not compacting the soil while burying vines. This year I have a specific vine layout I am trying to follow.

The stump roots can go 2 feet deep, if the soil is loose enough. Leaf nod roots tend to grow less than 6 inches down. thus the need for walking boards and shallow weeding.

That's only from my own experience, though.

I would till "As deep as you can!".

That is funny Amelio! When I was serving in Bosnia, farmers would report mines in their fields to the authorities. The germans would bring in thier tank mounted, flail mine clearer and chew up the entire field to clear the mines. Right behing the mine clearer, the farmer would be planting his crops. makes you wonder if the farmer placed the mines himself!

Just got about 18" deep with rooter in mine. After a couple more days gonna hit with tiller. After that I plan on the broadfork being my friend the rest of the year.
