I am going to try using heating cables this year for the first time. The cables say that they should be 3" apart in the pattern but how deep under the surface do you all put them? It would also seem to make sense to put several layers deep right under the plant since the roots will go down a ways and if I put the cable 6" deep or so the ground won't be very warm below that unless I have more heat cables under the first layer? I'm really kind of lost. What are you guys doing?

We go 8-10 deep. Then make a serpentine pattern back and forth. Using bamboo skewers to keep them lined up, so they never cross. Then cover them with the soil. Again make sure they do not cross,or they will burn through and short. Place the thermostat near the surface.

About 8" deep this year. I place the thermostat in the center. They're a Beyotch to install but do wonders!!!

I don't believe installing two sets is a good idea or even needed. I put mine about 8-10 inches deep.

Here are some pics (and descriptions) of how people install them.
