Just my luck, my youngest daugters plant that I'm trying to grow has a dried up crack in the stump about a inch out of the soil. I'm not sure how long its been like that.... I was just moving the leaves around and noticed it today. All around the crack is a yellowish color. The leaves and rest of the vine looks healthy. Any advice on how to save it? I have been spraying a product made by "garden safe" for about a month on it....it is a fungicide, insecticide and miticide. Hopefully that will help. On the upside of things, my plants finally hit a growing spurt and started to vine out. I just need to figure out which vines to prune and burry now.
This is a wake up call on how complicated it can be for a first time grower... the more i read and study what the plants are doing the more questions I have for my self. I'll get a pic on here as soon as I get back out to the patch. Thanks for any advice

Hard to tell fro the pic, but is the crack parallel with the vine\stump or is it perpendicular or across it?

Well I just got home from work and double checked the stump. It looks like the crack is perpendicular but I hope its not a vine borer or some bug.... the hole in the crack looks like it goes half way through the stump.
I've been trying to search on here what to do and I've read that some people have burried the damaged parts after they have dried out. What do you experts think... should I burry or leave exposed to the air?

I think you need to figure out the crack\hole reason first before burying. If it is borers you need to get a systemic pesticide asap. Is there a frass or sawdust type substance at the crack. Google vine borers frass and there are tons of images. IS the stump supported underneath, and maybe it cracked\snapped from pressure? Again, I can't tell from the pic, but that looks like a hole.

I sprayed with 7 tonight. I didn't think to look for sawdust.... I'll let dry and check tomorrow. Nope the stump is NOT supported. I'll have to look into that as well. SO much to learn.... hopefully next year will be a little easier :)
Thanks for everbodys time.... this site is helping me so much. Great group of people

If you have borers in the vine already, Sevin will do nothing as it is a contact spray. You need a systemic which is absorbed by the plant and kills anything that eats it inside or outside. Good luck

Come to think of it, I don't think you have Squash Vine borers in Utah. Sorry I'm no help, maybe a western grower can email you or help out.

I'm such a rookie, I've never heard of a systemic pesticide. I'll look into to it at our IFA store. Thanks for the help. I'll get some better pics when I get home
