Some kind of pest is stripping my vines. They do it in the middle of the day and they will take out any part of the plant except the leaves. I have to cover my whole plant with a net because if I leave a bit uncovered, it will be half eaten. I'm in Northern California. Any ideas?

I think it could birds, it seems to only be the vines that are showing from the top. We have many ground squirrels, too. Sometimes there will just be a inch long gouge, sometimes there will be a six inch strip of vine pulled. I have to reposition the nets every day because if there is a new bit of vine showing, they'll get it. I had one new pumpking a month ago that was eaten from the bottom of the stem right up to the leaves, which were all that was left. Mostly now, they are strips of vine.

Hey Danville;
May be try some garlic barrier; and some of that hotsause
spray on your vines; that might detour the birds for awile.
