A word of advice that I almost learned the hard way.

You need to remove the petals from the female after about 2 days. I left mine on the first year thinking that they would fall off naturally. After about 4 days I was advised to remove them by an experienced grower. The button was already slimy and soft and starting to rot. A day or two more I'm pretty sure I would have lost that pumpkin.

Dry- they need to be dry. Ive seen fruit on the scale in Oct with the dried flower encasing the "nub"- but that would never happen here. Too humid. Fuzzy white mold arrives w/in 2 days like Cecil says. After the flower starts to slime it gets removed, usually still leaving the "ring" at the base of the flower...which gets removed the next day or so. I spray the nub frequently with fungiside also.
